Press release concerning Badr Hari

Referring to Badr Hari’s contravention during his May 29 fight against Hesdy Gerges in the Amsterdam ArenA we would like to make the following statement:

We from European Fighting Network want to be clear about the fact that this kind of behavior will absolutely not be tolerated inside the ring. The de…cision to disqualify Badr was made within seconds. The referee made the decision to let Badr make this announcement to keep the feelings in the venue from running high. Badr couldn’t and didn’t do it because of a combination of booing from the audience and still having to process what just happened.

The most important matter of this case is that Badr himself knows very well that this action does not belong in a ring and that disqualification is a logical effect. Not only has Badr suffered huge damage in his reputation and did he lose his IT’S SHOWTIME world title, but we from European Fighting Network have also charged him with a fitting fine.

Considering this was the first time Badr Hari misbehaved at an IT’S SHOWTIME event (his other contravention was during a K-1 event), we, as IT’S SHOWTIME organization, leave it with this punishment. Badr has been told that a long suspension will follow after the next severe case of misbehavior.

The biggest concern our organization has, is that future kickboxers might think that this kind of behavior will be tolerated and/or valued. Kickboxing is a sport with tight regulations and anyone who does not live up to these rules does not belong in the ring.

We from European Fighting Network could easily have said that Badr would be suspended for the rest of the year, but that would have been a worthless punishment, since Badr probably wouldn’t be fighting at an IT’S SHOWTIME event anyway this year. This is because he already indicated that he would temporarily quit kickboxing and that if he would start again, he would fight for K-1 at the end of this year.

Since we do Badr Hari’s management as well, we will do anything we can to help him being an example for the sport, instead of having the image he has at the moment. Considering he is only 25 years old, we think that he deserves a second chance at IT’S SHOWTIME and we will try to guide him.

The reason we have waited a week with our press release is that we first wanted to talk to Badr in private about this matter. However, up until now our only possibility to talk to him about what happened and about the penalties we will give him, was by telephone, 2 days after the event. We couldn’t talk to him in private anymore than that because the police requested Badr to report himself at the police station. This request concerns Badr being a suspect of involvement in a case of the abuse of an Amsterdam doorman. This case was in the news a couple of weeks ago. However, Badr has not reported himself to the police and we also do not know where he is at the moment. We from European Fighting Network do also not know what the outcome of this case will be.

AMSTERDAM – De politie is zoekt sinds woensdag naar voormalig wereldkampioen vechtsport K1 Badr Hari. Hij wordt verdacht van het mishandelen van een portier van een uitgaansgelegenheid.

Zijn drie medeverdachten van 22 tot 47 jaar oud zijn woensdag gearresteerd, maar na verhoor weer vrijgelaten, meldt Het Parool. Zij lijken slechts bijrollen te hebben gespeeld bij het incident. Hari’s advocaat beloofde volgens de politie dat Hari zich in de loop van woensdag zou melden, maar dat deed hij niet.

De 33-jarige portier van club Blinq portier kreeg in februari klappen nadat hij enkele personen weigerde vanwege kledingvoorschriften. Hij brak hierdoor zijn neus en een oogkas. De portier deed geen aangifte maar uit rechercheonderzoek komt Hari als hoofdverdachte naar voren. Tot nu toe is hij onvindbaar.

Hari raakte ook binnen de ring in opspraak. Hij werd twee jaar geleden tijdens de finale in de K1 Grand Prix (superzwaargewicht) tegen Remy Bonjasky gediskwalificeerd omdat hij zijn op de grond liggende tegenstander een trap na verkocht. Datzelfde gebeurde hem enkele weken geleden tegen Hesdey Gerges in de Amsterdam ArenA. Hari maakte daarop bekend zijn vechtcarriere even te onderbreken. In 2007 en 2008 hield de Marokkaan-Nederlander de wereldtitel K1 in het zwaargewicht (tot 100 kg).

Badr Hari is wanted by the police for a abuse of a doorman of a nightclub. This happend in Februari 2010.

K1 fighter Remy Bonjasky maybe has to stop his K1 carreers due to an eye problem. He will be operated within a few months for the fourth time. After that he will decide if he will return back into the ring for a final fight for his fans. His decision will depend on how well his eyes have healed and if there is no risk for more damage to his eyes.

Remy Bonjasky is a 3 time K1 world champion and is considered one of the most honorable fighters and belongs to the select best of the world’s greatest fighters of all time.

AMSTERDAM – K-1-vechter Remy Bonjasky hoopt nog één keer in actie te kunnen komen, voordat hij een punt zet achter zijn kickbokscarrière. Een oogblessure noopt de ’Flying Gentleman’ tot stoppen. Omdat zijn zicht opnieuw is verslechterd, ondergaat Bonjasky over een paar maanden voor de vierde keer een operatie aan zijn oog.

„Pas na die operatie beslis ik of ik nog een afscheidspartij ga vechten. Als blijkt dat ik tijdens een gevecht een groot risico loop mijn oog extra te beschadigen, keer ik niet meer terug in de ring”, aldus de 34-jarige Bonjasky. „Ik heb drie wereldtitels veroverd. Als ik nu stop, hoef ik me niet te schamen. Ik heb er nog niet over nagedacht of ik in Japan of Nederland afscheid wil nemen. Het liefst zou ik dat in beide landen doen, maar dat zit er niet in. Ik moet dus kiezen.”

Het contract van Bonjasky met de Japanse K-1-organisatie liep overigens eind maart af. Volgens de Almeerder hebben de financiële problemen in de K-1 geen invloed gehad op zijn keuze om te stoppen. „De K-1 heeft aangegeven dat ik mijn contract kan verlengen met daarin dezelfde voorwaarden als in mijn oude verbintenis.”

Bonjasky werd in 2003 voor het eerst wereldkampioen in de K-1. In 2004 en 2008 herhaalde hij die prestatie. De laatste partij van Bonjasky dateert van vorig jaar december, toen Sem Schilt in de halve eindstrijd op de grote K-1-finaledag in Yokohama een maatje te groot was.
